Silicon Motion SM2704 SD Card Controller Features UHS-II 280 MB/s Performance

September 25, 2014, 2:27 pm

Silicon Motion LogoSilicon Motion, producer of flash memory controllers, has announced the SM2704 SD memory card controller. It supports UHS-II to provide up to 280 MB/s read and 260 MB/s write performance. It meets UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) specification to enable High Definition, 4K and 3D video recording. The controller is integrated into memory cards and manages the communication between the host device and the NAND flash memory in an SD card.

The SM2704 controller is the key to the new Lexar Professional 2000x and 1000x UHS-II SD cards. These cards use Micron's high-performance NAND memory along with the SM2704 controler to produce the fastest SD memory card to date.

This single channel controller supports both SLC and MLC NAND memory produced by suppliers Samsung, SanDisk/Toshiba, SK Hynix and Micron/Intel. Its fastest read and write performance are achieved using 20nm SLC NAND. The controller supports HD312 (312 MB/s) and FD156 (156 MB/s) UHS-II modes, and is backwards compatible with SD 2.x and 3.x specification, including UHS-I SD104 (104 MB/s).

Advanced features of the controller include global wear leveling and a configurable BCH ECC engine that provides zero overhead for error correction in read mode. It supports ONFI 3.x and Toggle 2.0 for maximum data transfer performance. Data security including password protection and Content Protection for Recordable Media (CPRM) are also supported.

The SM2704 is available in die form 58-pin LGA format measuring 10mm by 3.8mm.

Silicon Motion is the world's leading NAND flash memory controller producer for solid state devices.
