Sony M Series 64GB SDXC UHS-II U3 Memory Card Review Review

Introduction

Continuing Sony's memory card offerings, the M Series now includes Secure Digital memory cards. This UHS-II card uses the latest SD 4.0 specification to allow read speeds up to 260MB/s. Write speeds are quoted at 100MB/s according to Sony. Although the write speed is within the realm of UHS-I, UHS-II compatibility allows high speed transfers from the card to a computer when using a UHS-II card reader. The card is backwards compatible with UHS-I and standard SD devices, although it operates at lower speed (UHS-I speed is limited to 104MB/s and below).

The M Series 64GB SDXC card carries the U3 designation on the label to indicate it meets UHS Speed Class 3 which is defined as the ability to support continuous write speed of at least 30MB/s. This makes the card suitable for recording HD and 4K video streams. The card is also a good choice for continuous shooting in DSLR cameras with its 100MB/s write speed. The Sony M Series SD cards are available in 32, 64 and 128 GB capacities. The 64GB card (SF-M64/T) is tested in this review.

Performance

Read and write speed were checked using benchmark software with a variety of USB 3.0 card readers. The Sony M Series 64GB UHS-II card earned is rating, with 269.0 MB/s maximum sequential read speed in the Lexar Professional Workflow SR2 UHS-II SD card reader. The highest write speed benchmark was 99.6 MB/s in the Kingston FCR-HS4 Card Reader.
