Review: Toshiba Exceria UHS-I U3 64GB SDXC Memory Card

Toshiba Exceria UHS-I U3 64GB SDXC Memory Card Front

Introduction

The Toshiba Exceria memory cards are available around the world. The Exceria Type 1 and Type 2 cards are well-known internationally, but not officially distributed in the United States. Toshiba recently introduced the Exceria UHS-I Class 3 SD card in the US. This card has the same speed specifications as the Type 2, 95MB/s read and 60MB/s write, but adds the UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designation. This standard provides at least 30MB/s continuous write performance to support the latest HD video including 4K.

Toshiba has a long history with flash memory. It is a founding member of the SD Association, which was founded in 2000 along with SanDisk and Panasonic to develop memory card standards. Toshiba is also one of the few memory card brands that is involved in production of NAND memory chips that are used in SD cards.

The Exceria UHS-I Class 3 cards are available in 16, 32 and 64GB capacities. The 64GB SDXC card is reviewed here. It features a brushed silver and black label, similar to the gold and black label of the Toshiba Exceria Pro UHS-II card. The Exceria UHS-I U3 card has a five year warranty. The card is made in Japan.

Performance

In benchmark tests using USB 3.0 card readers, the Exceria UHS-I U3 card reached a maximum 98.1 MB/s sequential read speed, well above its 95MB/s specification. Sequential write speed peaked at 61.0 MB/s in the Lexar Dual Slot card reader, and achieved rated speed in several card readers.
