SanDisk Extreme 90MB/s UHS-I U3 V30 128GB microSDXC Card Review

Introduction

Extreme 90MB/s U3 V30 microSDXC cards bring a new V30 speed rating and larger capacity up to 128GB to SanDisk's Extreme microSD card line. The Extreme 90MB/s microSD cards are available in 16, 32, 64GB and 128GB capacities. The cards are rated 90MB/s read and 60MB/s write performance, except for the 16GB card which is rated 40MB/s write speed and does not have the V30 rating. The 128GB capacity card (SDSQXVF-128G-GN6MA) is tested in this review .

The Extreme 90MB/s U3 V30 card has UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designation and is able to sustain at least 30MB/s continuous write speed for recording 4K video. V30 is a new Video Speed Class rating, similar to SD Class and UHS Speed Class, and also means the card can sustain at least 30MB/s continuous write speed. The new Video Speed class is an attempt to simplify card ratings by combining the old two classes (SD Class and UHS Speed Class) into a single system. The new Video Speed Class ratings are V6, V10, V30, V60 and V90 and correspond to 6, 10, 30, 60 and 90 MB/s write speeds. Previously cards were rated SD Class 2, 4, 6 and 10, and UHS Speed Class 1 (U1 for 10MB/s) or UHS Speed Class 3 (U3 for 30MB/s).

Performance

To evaluate performance of the new SanDisk Extreme 90MB/s UHS-I V30 128GB SDXC card, the card was tested in several USB 3.0 card readers. The highest sequential read benchmark was 99.6 MB/s, well above the 90MB/s read speed rating claimed by SanDisk. Sequential write speed measured 64.0 MB/s, which is slightly faster than the 60MB/s rating quoted by SanDisk.
