SanDisk Extreme Plus 95/90 MB/s 32GB microSDHC UHS-I U3 Review

Introduction

The Extreme Plus 95/90 MB/s microSD card is an update to the Extreme Plus 80MB/s. According to SanDisk, the card is rated 95MB/s read speed and 90MB/s write speed, an improvement over the 80MB/s read and 60MB/s write of the previous card. Externally, the Extreme Plus 95/90MB/s card appears the same as the earlier 80MB/s version. The Extreme Plus supports UHS-I and meets UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) to provide at least 30MB/s continuous write speed for recording 4K video. Extreme Plus microSD cards are available in 16, 32 and 64 GB capacities. The 32GB microSDHC version is tested in this review.

Performance

When tested in card readers, the Extreme Plus 95/90MB/s 32GB microSDHC U3 card provided impressive performance. The card was tested in microSD slots when available, and in card readers without a dedicated slot it was tested in the included SanDisk microSD to SD adapter. Speed tests with and without the adapter in readers with both slots provide nearly identical results because adapters only serve as a connection pass-though.

SD vs microSD

The microSD version of the Extreme Plus 95MB/s offers the speed and capacity of a full-size SD card in a minuscule package. For devices that require a microSD card size it would be an obvious choice, and in cameras or other devices that have standard SD slots it can be used with the included adapter. There is no speed penalty for using this card in an adapter (its performance is the same with and without the adapter), but the microSD version usually costs more. With more devices such as smartphones and action cameras (GoPro) using microSD cards, it might make sense to purchase the microSD version even if your primary camera uses standard SD cards.
