SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 32GB microSDHC UHS-I U3 Memory Card Review

SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s UHS-I U3 MicroSDHC Card

The 32GB Extreme Pro UHS-I microSDHC card brings the top level of performance to the microSD size format. The Extreme Pro is the highest level of the SanDisk memory product range. The card supports UHS-I and has the UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) designation meaning it supports at least 30MB/s continuous write speed that is necessary for recording 4K video. The Extreme Pro microSD card is quoted at 95MB/s read and 90MB/s write. It is available in 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB capacities. The 32GB microSDHC version is reviewed here.

To evaluate its performance, the Extreme Pro 32GB microSDHC card was benchmarked in a variety of USB 3.0 card readers. It was tested directly in a microSD slot if available, or in a standard SD slot using the SanDisk microSD to SD adapter. Tests with and without the adapter in readers with both slot types provided virtually identical read and write speeds, as one might expect given that SD card adapters are pass-though devices.

The microSDHC version of the Extreme Pro performed similarly to standard SD-size Extreme Pro cards, offering nearly the best UHS-I performance among all SD cards tested.

SD vs microSD

The Extreme Pro 95MB/s microSD card offers nearly all the speed of its full-size counterpart in a tiny package. The micro card size adds compatibility with more devices including tablets, smartphones and action cameras (GoPro) that use the microSD format. The included adapter allows it to be used in devices with standard SD slots and the speed is not affected by using the adapter. Prices may fluctuate, but recently the cost of the microSD has been very close to full-size SD card.
