Sony SF-G Series 300MB/s UHS-II 32GB SDHC Card Review

Introduction

Sony SF-G UHS-II memory cards claim read speeds of 300MB/s and a maximum write speed of 299MB/s. The G Series cards are rated UHS Speed Class (U3) and can sustain at least 30MB/s continuous write speed for recording HD and 4K video. The Sony G Series SD cards are offered in 32, 64 and 128 GB capacities. The 32GB card model SF-G32/T1 with UPC 027242904323 is tested in this review.

To get the most speed out of this card a UHS-II device is required. The card can be used in UHS-I and Standard SD devices but the speed will be reduced. The extra row of pins on the back of the card provides the UHS-II interface, while the traditional row of pins allows it to work at standard SD and UHS-I bus speeds. When used in a UHS-I device the card is limited by SDR104 bus mode which supports speeds up to 104MB/s.

Performance

To evaluate performance of the new SF-G series cards, benchmarks were run in UHS-II and UHS-I card readers. The Sony G Series 32GB card reached a maximum sequential read speed of 303.9 MB/s in card readers. The sequential write speed measured 273.7 MB/s in the fastest card reader. The write speed is slightly off the 299MB/s write speeds advertised by Sony. It should be noted that the Lexar 2000x UHS-II 32GB card claims a 260MB/s write speed, but it measured up to 272.6 MB/s write speed in benchmarks.
