Introduction

The Lexar Professional 600x SD card is a high performance SD card for enthusiast and professional photographers. Lexar advertises the 600x at 90MB/s read and 45MB/s write. While there are other cards that boast higher write speeds, it offers one of the faster read speeds available in a UHS-I card. The 600x card is available in 16 and 32GB SDHC as well as 64, 128 and 256GB SDXC formats.

The Lexar brand is owned by Micron after merging in 2006. Lexar has expertise in memory card controller technology and the brand is widely recognized in digital photography. Micron is involved in semiconductor manufacturing including the NAND flash memory chips used inside memory cards. In a joint venture with Intel, Micron produces chips in Lehi, Utah. Final assembly of the memory cards is carried out in Asia.

Performance

In memory card readers the Lexar 600x surpassed its read speed rating of 90MB, reaching a peak of 96MB/s. Sequential write speed reached 48MB/s. Both of these are just above the card's advertised speed ratings (90MB/s read and 45MB/s write).

When testing with digital cameras the actual write speed peaked around 40MB/s in most cameras. Only the Canon 7d Mark II could manage better, with 42.7MB/s write speed. The latest cameras with UHS-I support reach the higher end of this range. Our in-camera testing shows this 32GB 600x card is not much faster than the 32GB 400x card.

At the time of this test the 600x was the highest write speed UHS-I SD card offered by Lexar. In subsequent tests the 600x card in 64 GB capacity measured a higher write speed. At Photokina in Fall 2014 Lexar announced two new UHS-II SD cards, the 1000X and 2000X, which achieve better performance in UHS-I mode. See the Lexar 1000X SD card and 2000X SD card reviews for details.
