Gobe Magic 104MB/s 64GB SDXC Memory Card Review

Introduction

Gobe was founded in 2012 by two Australian adventure photographers. They offer a range of Secure Digital and CompactFlash memory cards. The Gobe Magic 104MB/s is their top performing SD card with claimed 104MB/s read and 90MB/s write speeds. Gobe Magic cards are available in 16, 32, 64GB capacities. This review is for the 64GB SDXC card.

Gobe's mission includes environmental conservation and supporting conservation efforts around the world. Their product packaging is minimal: a card in a jewel case with a bar code. Their distribution is direct to customers through their web site as well as Amazon and eBay.

Performance

Read and write speeds of the Gobe Magic 104MB/s 64GB SDXC card were tested using a variety of USB 3.0 memory card readers. The claimed 104MB/s read speed happens to be the maximum bus speed provided by UHS-I; in actual use the host device and protocol overhead will reduce the actual speed. In card reader benchmark tests the Gobe Magic 64GB card attained 96.7 MB/s maximum sequential read speed. The maximum sequential write speed reached 89.2 MB/s. While the 104MB/s read speed was overly optimistic, the card nearly met the 90MB/s write speed claim.

The card has manufacturer ID (82) and OEM ID (JT) of Sony and the card has the same product name (NCard) as other Sony SD cards, such as the Sony 95MB/s U3 SD card. Furthermore, the Gobe Magic card benchmarks are very similar to the aforementioned Sony 95MB/s card. The external appearance of the card including the yellow write protect slider can also be found on Sony brand SD cards. The Gobe cards are available at a much lower cost than comparable Sony cards.
