The top-of-the-line memory card from Samsung is the PRO UHS-I 64GB SDXC. This card is ideal for DSLR and mirrorless photography especially where speed and continuous burst shooting is important. Its large capacity accommodates high megapixel images and HD video. It supports UHS-I and is labeled with UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) and SD Class 10, meaning the card can provide at least 10MB/s continuous write speed. According to Samsung the PRO provides up to 90 MB/s read and 80 MB/s write speed. The Samsung PRO is offered in 16, 32 and 64 GB capacities. The Samsung PRO 32GB SDHC card was reviewed previously. This review is for the 64GB SDXC card.
The PRO cards were introduced in 2014 and replace the earlier Pro Series. The original Pro Series cards were grey with a faux brushed metal label, while the new PRO cards are white with a mirror silver label. Samsung designed a unique case with eased edges and a recessed label that covers the entire top. The back of the card has a groove to help grip the card when removing from a card slot. On most SD cards this groove is on the top of the card, but in many Samsung cameras the card is inserted with the label side toward the door making the Samsung card configuration slightly easier to grip when used in Samsung cameras.
Samsung PRO cards incorporate multi-Level Cell (MLC) memory. This type of memory stores two bits of data per memory cell and has superior performance and supports more write cycles compared with the Triple Level Cell (TLC) memory found in the EVO and Standard series cards. MLC requires more raw material for a given capacity which makes the card more expensive to produce.
The Samsung PRO was tested in several USB 3.0 card readers to test maximum sequential read and write speeds. In these benchmarks the 64GB PRO card exceeded its stated transfer speed ratings. It reached 95 MB/s sequential read and 83 MB/s sequential write. These speeds are essentially the same as the 32GB SDHC version that was tested previously.
