Kingston Workflow SD Reader

Introduction

Kingston Workflow SD Card reader. With dual SD card slots and supprting UHS-I and UHS-II cards. It will operate as a standalone reader, or plug into the Kingston Workflow Station Dock.

The reader supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 up to 5Gbps and connects via a USB Type-C connector (USB-C). Kingston provides a 2 year warranty. The reader tested is model WFS-SDC with UPC 740617307740. The reader is made in Taiwan.

The entire body of the card reader is made of plastic. Two blue card access lights are on the front of the reader, one next to each slot.

The card reader measures 2.5 x 2.0 x 0.7 inches (63 x 50 x 17mm) not including the USB cable . The reader includes a USB-C to USB-C cable.

Inside the reader the Genesys Logic GL3231S controller handles the USB to Secure Digital (SD) interface. It allows dual SD card connections and supports UHS-I and UHS-II cards as well as DDR200 speed mode UHS-I. Also seen is the Etron EJ179W USB Type-C switch integrated circuit which handles the reversible USB-C plug.

Performance

The Kingston Workflow SD Reader was tested using UHS-II and UHS-I SD cards. Testing a single card at a time, the highest read speed was 304MB/s while the highest write speed was 286MB/s. The SDR200 mode UHS-I allowed several UHS-I cards to reach above 100MB/s, with various SanDisk cards reaching above 180MB/s read and 140MB/s write, and Kingston cards also worked with SDR200 to reach higher speeds. Samsung, Lexar and Acer cards did not seem to take advantage of SDR200 in this reader.

Unfortunately, using cards in both slots at the same time significantly reduced performance. Reading fast UHS-II cards cards simultaneously dropped the speed to around 90-96MB/s for each card when transferring large (32GB) files. Copying from one card to another averaged 74MB/s.
